My guess is that the guy was trying to get over his crippling shyness; if he could manage to play his guitar in front of complete strangers on a subway car, the stage would be no problem.
But he was playing very, very quietly — standing approximately four feet away from me, and still barely audible. I called the tumblr number while we crossed the Manhattan Bridge, just to prove to myself later that I wasn’t imagining it. You can kind of make out a couple of notes towards the end.
I thought about saying “good job” when he packed up his guitar and left at Atlantic/Pacific, but I didn’t want to encourage the creepy aspect of his performance.
